PeriO: The Multifunctional Compass

Redesigning the Traditional Compass for Modern Creatives

Traditionally, using a compass to draw precise circles and arcs has always been a challenge. Adjusting the radius and matching it with a ruler can be cumbersome, and determining the angle of the arc is often imprecise. Additionally, the sharp points of traditional compasses pose a safety risk. Inspired by the perimeter circle command in Solidworks, designer Huiqi Jia conducted extensive research to develop a more efficient and user-friendly solution.

What sets PeriO apart is its multifunctionality. Not only can it draw circles with ease, but it can also create arcs and straight lines. By simply rotating the wheel, users can calculate the length of the drawn line and the angle of the arc. The radius is adjusted by moving both sides of the compass, and the measurement is displayed on the disc, ensuring accuracy and precision.

The design of PeriO prioritizes both functionality and safety. The shell is made of lightweight aluminum, reducing the overall weight of the compass. The center and pen contact parts, as well as the wheels, are made of silicone, increasing friction and providing a secure grip. This innovative combination of materials ensures a smooth and controlled drawing experience.

Measuring at just 45mm in width, 21mm in depth, and 5.5mm in height, PeriO is incredibly portable and can easily fit into any artist's toolkit or designer's bag. Its compact size makes it ideal for on-the-go creativity, whether in the studio, classroom, or outdoors.

During the design process, Huiqi Jia collaborated with Yunsong Liu to create 3D models for testing and verification. By studying the principle of determining a circle with three points, they were able to develop a shape that seamlessly integrates this principle into the functionality of PeriO.

Recognizing its innovation and ingenuity, PeriO was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Art and Stationery Supplies Design category in 2022. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, technical skill, and contribution to improving the quality of life.
